The Difference Between PCIe x1, x4, x8, x16 and x32

PCIe connections vary by dedicated data lanes, each providing independent bandwidth unlike earlier shared architectures.

PCIe slot comparison diagram

The Short Answer

  • PCIe x1: one data lane
  • PCIe x4: four data lanes
  • PCIe x8: eight data lanes
  • PCIe x16: sixteen data lanes
  • PCIe x32: thirty-two data lanes (very rare)

Key Differences from PCI/PCI-X

Unlike PCI/PCI-X which share data lines, PCIe uses serial data transmission with dedicated lanes per card. Each lane supports 250-1969 MB/s depending on PCIe version.

Compatibility

PCIe cards work in slots with matching or greater lane counts. An x8 card works in x8, x16, or x32 slots. Check motherboard specs — some slots have fewer actual connections than their physical size suggests.
